How is Botox Used?
Botox causes temporary paralysis of muscles or blocks certain nerves. Wrinkles result from muscle contractions under the skin when people smile, laugh or frown.
Botox prevents the muscles from contracting, to allow the skin to remain smooth. Tiny needles are used to inject the medication under the skin and into the muscle or nerve. The effects generally last three to twelve months, although different patients may have different results.
What is Botox?
Botox is a medication made from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. The bacteria are the same one that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning that produces paralysis. In minor doses, the refined toxin is not dangerous. It is most commonly used to treat wrinkles in the face. Additionally, Botox can be used to treat various conditions like excess underarm sweating, migraines, overactive bladder and misaligned eyes.
There are various ways of using these products, but here at the Los Angeles Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we believe in a “less-is-more” approach to your facial freezing. Neuromodulators have long been the mainstay of any cosmetic practice. They are designed as a safe and effective way of getting rid of wrinkles on the forehead, glabella (11s), eyes (crow’s feet) and many other areas including the neck.

What's the Advantage of Botox Over Other Treatments?
Unlike a facelift or other surgical procedure, Botox injections can be performed in a doctor's office. Ice packs or anesthetic creams are used to numb the skin rather than a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation.
An incision is unnecessary, and patients can resume their normal activities immediately. The procedure may take only 20 to 30 minutes, allowing for a quick stop at the doctor's office. Results are immediate and side effects are usually minor.
Who is a Good Candidate for Botox?
People who are in good health and who have unwanted facial wrinkles are good candidates for Botox. The wrinkles must be located in an area where Botox is effective, like around or between the eyes, on the forehead or around the neck.
Wrinkles caused by sagging skin don't generally respond to Botox treatments. Botox cannot be used in those who are allergic to the medication, people with skin infections or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can Botox treat TMJ?
BOTOX when injected into the facial muscles, relieves TMJ and jaw tension for patients experiencing soreness and discomfort. Experience has shown that, while using botox to treat TMJ it is a fairly new treatment, it has so far been proven to be extremely effective.
The TMJ is constantly used for everyday activities such as swallowing, talking, eating, etc. If you find yourself excessively grinding your teeth, or the joint becomes displaced, it may result in unbearable headaches as well as severe sharp pains in the jaw. BOTOX has been used to relieve pain by freezing these muscles and making the muscles that produce the headaches and pain relaxed and unable to move thereby preventing further pain.
